Extra pay for Extra work
Being an SA is an exciting journey, but it’s not without its challenges. I’ve been in your shoes and want you to know that asking questions, staying informed, and joining the union can make all the difference in your experience – and your pay!
Remember: knowledge is power; the more you know, the better equipped you’ll be to thrive in this industry.
Clearing up the mystery surrounding supplement fees
As someone who spent 10 years working as a Supporting Artiste (SA), I know first hand how confusing payment agreements can seem at times – especially when it comes to supplement fees. I’ve been working at Casting Collective HQ for five years now and see the same questions cropping up time and time again. If you’ve ever sat in a holding area, listening to bits of advice about payment from fellow SAs, you’re not alone. It’s common for newer artistes to feel unsure about the finer details of payment agreements and supplements. Getting to grips with the details of the agreement can take time.
What Are Supplement Fees?
In simple terms, supplement fees are additional payments you may be entitled to for specific circumstances on set. For example, you might earn a supplement if you have a haircut, fire a gun, drive a car, swim or double for an actor.
These fees aren’t added to the voucher automatically, they’re agreed upon by production and added by the 2nd AD (Assistant Director) at the end of the day.
Confidence Is Key
If you’re unsure whether you’re entitled to a supplement, the best time to ask is on the day, while you’re still on set. The AD’s are there to help clarify these details, asking them directly ensures you have the correct information and it’s the best opportunity to get supplements that are due added onto the voucher. I know from experience that it’s not always easy to speak up. Many SAs – especially those just starting out – feel hesitant to raise payment queries on set. But here’s the thing: it’s always better to ask.
By asking about supplements on the day, you’ll avoid confusion later when your estimate voucher arrives. Trust me, there’s no such thing as a “silly question” when it comes to your work and pay.
Join the Union
One of the best ways to feel confident about your rights and entitlements as an SA is to join the union. The union agreement outlines everything you need to know about payment structures, supplements, and working conditions. Being a member gives you access to support and resources designed specifically for SAs. If you’re serious about making the most of your career as an SA, joining the union is an investment in your knowledge and confidence.
For more information on joining a union please visit:The PACT/FAA agreement covers the majority of the Film and TV productions we work on. It covers projects within a 40-mile radius of Charing Cross. The FAA (Film Artistes Association), a division of BECTU, negotiates this agreement.
