The next level

Getting selected by a major production for a background role is, in some ways, like completing a computer game and beating the final boss—only most of the time it’s a game you don’t know you are in.

It might seem random, but peeling back the production curtain, you would be amazed by how many different levels of the game you have to pass unknowingly before being selected.

Let’s take a lighthearted look at the example of a period drama, and randomly pick a World War II film.

Level 1: The Initial Selection

The booker in our office will put your photos forward if they think you match the brief with the right “look,” your measurements match if a costume production and experience and feedback, but that’s not the end of the process, merely the beginning. You will need to get through the gatekeepers.

Level 2: Availability Check

This is the only part you are knowingly aware of—are you available for the filming date? Tip: it’s crucial you don’t say you are free and then drop out; doing this will ensure you never pass level 1 again.

Level 3: Internal Review

Internal departments of the production—Assistant Directors, Hair and Make-up, Costume—all review the potential candidates to ensure you fit the overall look and style they need. Is your hair natural with no dye and the right length? Do your sizes fit the period costume?

Level 4: Boss Level – Director’s Approval

You’ve almost made it! The Assistant Director has been working late, preparing the presentation of the whole scene to the director. Often, the director will select or deselect extras as a group. The director walks in for a 10-minute review of all the photos of the extras. Pleased with the look of the group, they thank everyone for their hard work, zooming in on your photo they suddenly comment on your nice smile but mention your eyes are similar to the principal actor’s. You get a big X on your face and go back to level 1 ;) Better luck next time.

Tips to Level Up and increase your chances of being selected:

  1. Keep Your Availability Accurate: Always ensure that you are truthful about your availability.
  2. Update Your Look: Regularly update your profile photos to match your current look.
  3. Be Professional: Maintain a positive attitude by being reliable, professional on set. Remember, each level you pass increases your chances of getting selected.
  4. Keep your sense of humour, stay persistent and above all always be polite to everyone and smile.
